The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
