The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any prominent honors show approaches, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of followers with niche passions.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
